The AI Marketing Glossary: 25 Terms Worth Knowing in 2026

glossaryAI marketingdefinitions

Core concepts

AI agent: software that pursues a goal using tools and judgment, not just answers to prompts. AI workforce: multiple specialized agents coordinated as a team. Orchestrator: the agent that owns the user relationship, breaks down requests, and delegates to specialists. Specialist agent: an agent with a narrow role, its own instructions, and its own tools. System prompt: the standing instructions that define an agent's role and rules.

Control and trust

Human-in-the-loop: a workflow where a person approves actions before they execute. Approval gate: the queue where proposed actions wait for that decision. Autonomy levels: graduated independence, from L1 Assisted (everything approved) to L4 Self-Driving (a domain runs end to end). Approval rate: the share of an agent's work a human accepts, the objective trust score. Audit trail: the permanent log of every proposal, decision, and execution. Blast radius: how many people a mistake touches; the bigger it is, the longer the gate stays.

Knowledge and quality

RAG (retrieval-augmented generation): agents search your documents before writing, so output uses your facts. Knowledge base: the indexed document store RAG searches. Embedding: the numeric meaning-fingerprint that makes that search work. Brand guardrails: codified voice rules applied to every draft. QA gate: an automated review pass before work reaches a human. Hallucination: confident output not grounded in any source; what RAG and QA exist to prevent.

Economics and infrastructure

Token: the unit models read and write; what you actually pay for. Model routing: matching each task to the cheapest model that does it well. Cost per task: the metric that replaces cost per hour. Tool call: an agent using software (CRM, search, file creation) rather than just writing. Delegation: one agent handing a brief to another, with the result returned for review.

Distribution

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization): earning citations in AI-generated answers. Entity authority: how clearly engines understand who you are; AEO's version of domain authority. Share of model: how often AI assistants mention your brand for category questions, the emerging counterpart to share of voice.
